Ray Mears hand-picked Julius Pettersson from a wide choice of Scandinavian blacksmiths, as the skilled craftsman best fitted to make a Blade worthy to bear the Ray Mears logo!  Ray wanted a general purpose Knife suitable for bushcraft.

Julius Pettersson is part of a long tradition of blacksmithing; yet another skill that survives in Sweden.  Now a national teacher of blacksmithing in Karlsborg, Julius first became interested in smithing at the age of 6, when his grandfather made him a knife.

In Ray Mears’ ‘Bushcraft Survival’ Series 2, Julius is seen making one of these Blades in his forge, by wrapping a piece of hard carbon steel within a piece of softer metal, to give the Blade better strength and flexibility.  Ray observed that Julius made it look easy, but the knowledge and experience needed to make such a Blade took many years to learn.

Julius ground your Blade to the correct shape and after various stages of reheating, your Blade was hard enough for a final polish.  ‘Forge finishing’ is very popular in Sweden, and the quality of a forge-finished Blade is considered far superior to one that has been highly polished.

We passed this Blade to a respected English Knife Maker, who hand-built a beautiful Sami handle, from Antler, wood, and fibre liner spacers

This Woodlore Fire Stick comes with a metal striker, and when scraped, produces bright, white sparks to light your tinder.  Its handle is embossed with the Ray Mears Logo.
